But during COVID, their landlord decided he wanted to sell. The couple were not able to afford a new home and quickly found themselves out on the streets.
As an Army veteran with a career in law enforcement, John was used to serving others. In their kindness, John and Jackie much preferred to serve others than to be served, so “to be on the other side—it was hard,” they said. They felt isolated and ashamed. They hid the fact that they were homeless from everyone—their coworkers, friends, even their daughter.
During these dark days, Jackie refused to leave her husband’s side. She said they were a “unit,” and she was determined they’d stay together no matter what. But many shelters have separate men’s and women’s areas. To stay together, the couple had to live out of their car and take shifts sleeping. This took a mental and physical toll, especially on John, who suffers from health issues.
As inflation drives up the cost of rent and affordable housing remains in short supply, thousands of Floridians face desperate situations like John and Jackie’s.
We’re working hard to place these neighbors in safe, dignified, and affordable housing. But right now, so many people are coming to SVdP CARES for help that there’s a waitlist. With summer right around the corner, it will be especially important to make sure these neighbors are off the streets and sheltered from the brutal heat.
Your gift helps to rapidly house those experiencing homelessness within 30 days and connect them with the support and resources they need to live safe, stable lives.
This support was the lifeline that Jackie and John needed. When they finally connected with SVdP CARES, they were first quickly placed into a hotel. Then our staff helped John and Jackie find permanent housing that they could afford.
SVdP CARES hired a moving company to help the couple transition into their new home. This extra act of kindness—made possible by donations from friends like you—meant the world to John, who has bad knees and a bad back.
A year and a half later, John and Jackie are loving their home. They feel so grateful for the new life they have received. Their gratitude has moved them to give back, so Jackie serves meals to those suffering from homelessness once a week, and John always makes it a point to talk with them and share resources.
What a moving example of servant hearts this Easter season. Jackie says:
God has put really great people in our life, and the people at St. Vincent de Paul CARES showed us compassion and empathy; you can tell they have a passion for their jobs in helping others.”
